•In a Gothic cathedral strange phenomena occur; a librarian discovers the reason: the church stands on land that holds the bodies of many innocents massacred by the crusaders during the Middle Ages. Now the souls of the poor want to avenge themselves by killing the people trapped in the cathedral. The only survivor will manage to collapse the building through a special device. Second direction for Soavi after his good debut with "Deliria", which this time even has the collaboration of the duo Argento-Ferrini for the screenplay, and Emerson-Goblin for the soundtrack. Although it is a work of undeniable charm, "La Chiesa" suffers somewhat from the differences in style between Argento and Soavi, who integrate less well compared to what happened in "Demonios" for Argento and Bava. A film that does not convince, evokes good atmospheres, especially in the initial part, but the development of the story is confusing and not always clear, making the film (a very serious flaw for a horror film) little "scary". Yet another wasted opportunity! Notable in the cast is a very young Asia Argento.
