Ambientada en 1990, un soltero solitario llamado David busca un escape del trabajo diario de cuidar a su anciana madre. Mientras busca pareja a través de un servicio de citas por video, descubre una extraña cinta VHS llamada Rent-A-Pal. Presentada por el encantador y carismático Andy, la cinta le ofrece la compañía, la compasión y la amistad que tanto necesita.
