REVIEWS (1)
Max Dire is a special agent very intent on always carrying out his work in the best possible way. But his life will suffer a hard blow after his wife decides to leave him because of his job and his colleague, also his best friend, unexpectedly takes his own life. Following these unpleasant events, Agent Dire will be contacted and forced to join a team of very special agents, led by the mysterious Adam Garau and who seem to have supernatural powers. Max will discover thus a horrible truth about his new colleagues, who are nothing more than ravenous werewolves made invulnerable by a particular drug.
Released in the mid-1990s, this "Eclisse Letale" is a film that tries to contaminate the horror genre with the action-crime genre, inserting fierce werewolves into a crime story; but the result is certainly not the best.
The film, directed by Anthony Hickox ("Hellraiser III"), presents multiple errors at the script level; indeed, the quite interesting and rather original story is completely nullified and wasted by an unconvincing script, which is not able to perfectly blend the two genres (action and horror), creating a film with little action to be considered as such, but with too much action to be considered a real horror.
The cast is made up of actors who, although they are not real stars, are quite convincing and suitable for playing their role; among them, we can find Mario Van Peebles ("Jaws 4- the Revenge"; "Alé") in the role of the tough police agent, who, although rather inexpressive, manages to get quite well into the character and the part; Patsy Kensit ("Lethal Weapon 2") in the role of the beautiful and seductive blonde who drags the police agent into the worst of nightmares; and Bruce Payne ("Ripper – Letters from Hell") suitable for playing the role of the bad detective Garau.
Definitely insufficient, however, the makeup of the werewolves (rendered with a banal high forehead, sharp teeth, and claws on the hands) which is too simple and poor and makes the monsters much more suited to appear in a vampire film than in a film about werewolves; much more fascinating is the rendering of the final wolf, which, although a bit too clumsy and much closer to resembling a bear than a wolf, is nice and pleasant because rendered with a big plush costume.
As for the "violence" sector, the film also leaves much to be desired. Indeed, although it abounds with shootings with splashes of blood here and there that tint the whole film red, the film is quite exempt from scenes that can be considered splatter or, even less, gore.
In conclusion, this "Eclisse Letale" is a poorly executed action/horror, well thought out but poorly executed and that, more than a horror film, seems to be one of the many sloppy films played by Van Damme or Steven Seagal. A film that could be interesting to the most die-hard fan of action/horror but strongly discouraged for everyone else.
