Il regista F.W. Murnau è in procinto di girare il più grande horror muto di tutti i tempi: "Nosferatu"; ma siccome vuole che il suo film sia realistico, chiede a Max Screck, un vero vampiro, di interpretare la parte dello spaventoso Conte Orlak, promettendogli di fargli succhiare il collo dell'attrice tossicodipendente Greta Schroeder alla fine delle riprese. Screck accetta e Murnau giustifica il suo aspetto strano alla troupe dicendo che l'attore segue un suo metodo di recitazione molto particolare, ma certamente non può giustificare perchè debbano sempre girare di notte e perchè alcuni membri della troupe stiano sparendo misteriosamente...

Germania 1921: Friederich Willhelm Murnau sta girando "Nosferatu il Vampiro", il primo film sui vampiri della storia. Il regista è determinato a realizzare la pellicola nella maniera più realistica possibile per questo ha scritturato un vero vampiro, Max Schreck, senza però prevederne le conseguenze… “L’ombra del vampiro” non è un vero horror ma piuttosto un film che ci racconta, in maniera del tutto fantasiosa e romanzata, la storia della creazione di quel capolavoro dell’horror che è “Nosferatu” del 1922. Prodotto da Nicolas Cage ed interpretato da due ottimi e carismatici attori come John Malkovich (nella parte di Murnau) e Willem Dafoe (nella parte del conte Shreck) il film è stilisticamente notevole ma un po’ stucchevole e lezioso. Da Oscar la perfetta interpretazione di Dafoe. Adatto ad un pubblico “impegnato”.

Did I kill one of your people, Murnau? I can't remember.

F.W. Murnau (John Malkovich) is filming Nosferatu (1922), but isn't reclusive star Max Schreck (Willem Dafoe) taking his role of the vampire way too seriously?

In some ways it's a curate's egg of a film. It certainly helps if you are a lover of old classic film and have some knowledge of the source material at the film's core. It's a fabulous concept that the screenplay is based around, that the star of the film may actually be a real vampire, and the whole production is executed with consummate skill (Dafoe was deservedly Oscar nominated as were make-up artists Ann Buchanan & Amber Sibley). But come the end it fizzles out and proves to not have delivered on its devilishly intriguing premise. Fun, though, and tech credits all round keep one well involved. 6/10
