In a contemporary New York City, members of a dysfunctional family of vampires are trying to come to terms with each other, in the wake of their father's death. Meanwhile, they are being hunted by Dr. Van Helsing and his hapless nephew. As in all good vampire movies, forces of love are pitted against forces of destruction.

An ancient family of vampires finds itself reunited in New York at the bedside of the elderly patriarch of the species, now dying. On their trail is Van Elsing, who, with the help of his nephew, seeks to eliminate these creatures of the night from the face of the earth. Shot in black and white by a director who has David Lynch as a mentor, "Nadja" is a sophisticated fantasy-horror (though there is little that is horrific): soft atmospheres and careful direction, but inexorably slow pacing and a total lack of suspense. It's the kind of film that makes critics happy but bores the public.

This is what happens when the Greenwich Village crowd tries to remake and rewrite a classic. The B&W adds a nostalgic touch, but even Peter Fonda, or the lesbian love scene, can't save this one from the bottom of the heap. The ONLY redeeming quality the film has, is that it is a Non-Christmas Christmas movie and makes one of my lists, albeit it's now the last place movie of that list.
