The Verdict
1594 San Miniato, Grand Duchy of Tuscany: a peasant healer, accused of witchcraft and fornication with the Devil, is tried by ecclesiastical authorities. As always happened, those who ended up before the tribunal of the Holy Inquisition had their fate already sealed… Based on the true records of a trial against a peasant woman accused of witchcraft during the time of the Holy Inquisition, this film is a sort of documentary that reconstructs in a historical and systematic way the methods of judgment and the types of trials that took place before the ecclesiastical authorities during the time of the "witch hunt". Theatrical interpretations, fixed camera shots, and the black and white in which it is filmed increase the charm of the film and demonstrate the care with which it was made. The inevitable slowness of the narrative rhythm and the "research" of the dialogues do not make it a film suitable for all viewers.
