THE THIRD EYE

Il terzo occhio

1966 • IT HMDB
June 11, 1966

Young nobleman Mino lives with his mother and Marta, the housekeeper, in an old, decaying castle. He is infantile and morbidly attached to the weird duo; his only hobby is taxidermy. Laura, Mino's fiancee, is met with jealousy and hatred by the two women, and decides to leave the castle; but Marta sabotages her car brakes and she is killed. Mino takes her body back to the castle. Meanwhile, his mother is violently arguing with Marta, who throws her down the stairs and repeatedly bashes her head on the floor. The distraught Mino descends into madness: he picks up a stripper at a nightclub and brings her home, then strangles her while having sex next to Laura's dead body. He does the same with a prostitute. Marta discovers these murders and offers to help dispose of bodies. A year later, Daniela (Laura's twin sister) arrives at the castle...

The Verdict

A young man from a noble family, after his father's death, spends his days locked up in the house with his possessive mother and the governess. Having finally found a beautiful fiancée, he decides to marry her, but the two "women of the house" make sure the future wife dies in an accident.

A young man from a noble family, after his father's death, spends his days locked up in the house with his possessive mother and the governess. Having finally found a beautiful fiancée, he decides to marry her, but the two "women of the house" make sure the future wife dies in an accident. The young man goes mad and, after his mother's death, killed by the governess herself, starts bringing girls into the house to then kill them... A decent atmosphere thriller-horror, made even more appealing by some violent murders and the valid performance of the protagonist, a very young but already charismatic Franco Nero. Solid, though uninspired, the direction by Guerrini. Too bad the pace is not very high and the ending rather predictable. Curiosity: a few years later, the story of the film will be picked up, quite faithfully, in a sort of splatter remake, by the legendary Joe D'Amato for his masterpiece "Buio Omega".
