Dimensioni
A woman is hospitalized after being the victim of a sexual assault in a forest. The doctors attempt to make a diagnosis, but the patient seems to have fallen into a mysterious state of confusion where reality and fantasy blur together.
After "Vittima del desiderio umano," independent filmmaker Stefano Visintin directs "Dimensioni," a captivating short film that constantly plays with the viewer's emotions, disorienting them and plunging them into a chaotic multidimensional trip.
Kudos to the director for his excellent approach to the material at hand: an almost abstract plot that is effectively rendered into images through a continuous blend of genres and influences ranging from "rape & revenge" to hospital thriller, even venturing effortlessly into sci-fi territory.
In Visintin's work, reality does not exist; everything is questioned, and multiple truths are left to the viewer's imagination, guiding them to gradually lose themselves in the dimensional limbo that forms the various layers of the film. The interpretations "Dimensioni" lends itself to are numerous, though the most evident intent seems to be mapping a distorted view of the human mind, where violence and degradation overpower hope, and where there is no "cure" to mend the fragments of a shattered psyche.
Quality pessimism, in short.
Beyond the complex interpretative work "Dimensioni" can demand, we are dealing with a very well-crafted short film, where direction and editing are extremely polished (applause for the quirky directorial choices favoring improbable close-ups) and where the fitting soundtrack provides the final touch of quality.
Unfortunately, the performances are not very convincing, especially the medical team, whose acting feels a bit too "Read and repeat."
Add half a pumpkin more to the rating.
