•Edward Douglas, having just escaped a sea accident, is taken by Dr. Montgomery to the island where the mysterious Dr. Moreau, a great expert in genetics, conducts his terrible experiments. Moreau's goal is to improve the human race by creating, through genetic manipulation experiments between humans and animals, a new race. But the results are somewhat disappointing and, certainly, frightening. Moreau has created monsters and when his "creatures" disobey him and their animal instinct prevails, the island will be turned upside down: the eminent scientist, his sons, and Montgomery will all be torn to pieces... This is the third free adaptation of Wells' novel after those of 1933 and 1977 and is almost a kind of remake of the 1977 film. The main draw of the film is its cast, which features an eternal star (Marlon Brando) alongside a Val Kilmer who is quite stoic in his few facial expressions. Few sequences are memorable (notable is the one at the beginning of the film of the birth of the beast-woman) for a film that is nevertheless quite fluid and, like the 1977 one, would be more suited to the fantasy genre than to "pure" horror. The special effects by Stan Winston are particularly noteworthy, which, although not exceptional, offer some interesting moments to the viewer, but they alone cannot save the film, confirming that appearance is not everything in the seventh art.
