REVIEWS (1)
Journalist Cindy Campbell investigates a mysterious tape that kills anyone who watches it after seven days. Meanwhile, in the quiet farm of Tom Logan and his rapper brother, strange things start happening: their wheat field has been devastated by an eerie crop circle that seems to announce a terrifying alien invasion. The only one who can solve this terrible situation is the elected Cindy, who, along with the two farmers and her nephew Cody, will try to find the connection between the killer videotape and the terrible alien invasion.
Third installment of the comedic-demonic series "Scary Movie" which this time decides to change its comedy and "color".
After the first two chapters based on vulgar comedy created by the African-American Wayans brothers (Keenen Ivory Wayans in the director's chair; Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans in the cast), for this third chapter, it was decided to change ingredients starting with the direction entrusted to the expert of demented films David Zucker ("Airplane!" and the "Police Academy" series) who seems to do very well directing a film in which idiocy is of fundamental importance.
The only survivors from the cast of the previous chapters are Anna Faris (once again as Cindy Campbell) and Regina Hall (as Brenda, Cindy's usual friend), but new famous faces appear like Charlie Sheen (as the priest who lost his faith after the death of his wife, just like Mel Gibson in "Signs"), Leslie Nielsen (as the senile President of the United States), Pamela Anderson, and Jenny McCarthy.
"Scary Movie 3" focuses much of its attention on ridiculing very famous films like "Signs" and "The Ring" but also other films like "8 Mile," "Matrix Reloaded," "The Others," and "Hulk" (only included in the discarded alternative ending).
The comedy seems to change radically, transforming the vulgar and scurrilous comedy into a slightly more "raffinate" comedy but that still manages to entertain the viewer and perhaps even more so than the Wayans brothers did.
The gags all turn out to be quite spot-on and funny (especially the brilliant killer footage of the videotape, really funny) and manage to never be repetitive.
The sore point of the film, however, can be found in the introduction, which, after having seen Carmen Electra dealing with a clumsy masked killer ("Scary Movie") and James Woods as a priest who must exorcise a possessed child ("Scary Movie 2"), this time sees Pamela Anderson and Jenny McCarthy trying to avoid death after watching the cursed tape. Indeed, this time the beginning seems more lackluster than usual and with fewer funny ideas that try to make you laugh but only manage to miss their target.
Finally, even the story as a whole seems to be more convincing than usual and better thought out (they surely had five more minutes to spare), so much so that the references to the various films manage to connect with each other quite well, avoiding unnecessary and poorly inserted passages.
In conclusion, "Scary Movie 3" is a simple mindless demencial film that still manages to achieve its goal: to make the viewer laugh.
Recommended for lovers of the comedic-demonic genre and for those who want to spend a carefree evening with friends.
