MAKE-OUT WITH VIOLENCE

2008 US HMDB
April 12, 2008

A genre-bending tale of a boy trying to fulfill his unrequited love for a girl who has risen from the dead. It tells the story of twin brothers Patrick and Carol Darling, newly graduated from high school and struggling to come to terms with the mysterious disappearance of their friend, the bright and beautiful Wendy Hearst. When a drive through the countryside surrounding their suburban community leads to the discovery of Wendy's mysteriously animated corpse, the boys secretly transport the un-dead Wendy to an empty house in hopes of somehow bringing her back to life. As the sweltering summer pushes on, they must maintain the appearance of normalcy for their friends and family as they search for ways to revive the Wendy they once knew, or, failing that, to satisfy their own quests for love amongst the living and the dead.

Carol and Patrick Darlin are teenage twins living in a quiet American town; their life flows smoothly like that of their peers until one day, their mutual friend Wendy Gearst, whom both are in love with, disappears without a trace. After a few days, the searches stop and everyone returns to their normal life; things change when Carol, along with her younger brother, finds Wendy's lifeless body by a lake. Little by little, the twins realize that their beloved has turned into a zombie; they decide to take her home and care for her hoping to bring her back to normal. Following the success of the "Twilight" saga, the Deagol Brothers decide to shoot "Zombie lover," a film primarily aimed at a teenage audience, in which horror should live alongside romance and irony. I say should because the film in question is a flop in all aspects. For the 106 minutes of the film's duration, there is only the title and Wendy in her non-living version that hint at horror, but Wendy seems more like a terminally ill drug addict than a zombie, who does not possess any of the peculiar characteristics of these "monsters," except for the jerky movements and the hunger for fresh meat, which, by the way, is quite unnoticeable. The plot only presents a good starting point that quickly gets lost in a jumble of clichés and rather banal and uninteresting ideas; suspense and fear are not present in the Deagol Brothers' film, which focuses mainly on the romantic and social aspects of the plot. The real problem is that these two aspects are developed in a superficial and absurdly boring manner, without the slightest twist. It almost seems like facing an imitator of our Muccino who, despite his efforts, fails to do his job, whether in directing or casting. The actors, in their first appearance in front of a camera, are far from professional and do not convey the slightest emotion, making them uninteresting to the viewer. All of this is completed by a voice-over performed by the younger brother of the protagonists, which completely nullifies the little pathos present in the film. As for the quality of the film and the shots, they are certainly not high quality, as the colors are always quite faded and the scenes, especially those shot outdoors, are often blurred, even for the objects closest to the lens; all of this is completed by a video noise, sometimes too annoying, probably due to excessive compression during encoding. This "Zombie Lover" can therefore be counted among the ten worst films I have ever seen, both in terms of the plot and its development; throughout its duration, there is a strong desire to turn off the DVD player or watch something else, trying not to fall asleep between one yawn and another. Hoping that the guru George A. Romero has not seen this abomination, I advise not to waste time watching the film and to move on.
