Sam Raimi is officially returning to horror.
The acclaimed American filmmaker will direct Magic, a new film adaptation based on William Goldman's novel, previously brought to the screen in 1978.
The project marks a major comeback for Raimi, who in recent years had somewhat stepped away from horror cinema to pursue mainstream productions, though he maintained his unmistakable visual and narrative style.
Following the commercial success of Send Help, a thriller released in early 2026 that earned roughly $100 million worldwide, Raimi will guide audiences through the darkest psychological and sinister corners that have defined much of his artistic career.
A Psychological Horror Classic
The original 1978 film starred Anthony Hopkins as a tormented ventriloquist manipulated by his own puppet, a film that blended delusion, madness, and obsession.
Hopkins' performance is still regarded as one of the most compelling of his careerβa precursor to the unsettling presence that would later define his unforgettable Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs.
The new Magic will be written by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, screenwriters who will reunite with director Sam Raimi following their work on Send Help.
Produced under Lionsgate's banner, the project will be helmed by Raimi alongside Roy Lee, a prolific producer behind numerous critically acclaimed contemporary horror films, including It. Other producers include Chris Hammond, Tim Sullivan, and Zainab Azizi.
