Unhinged: Netflix's Bold New Interactive Horror Experience

Netflix embraces interactive horror that turns your smartphone into the nightmare itself

Netflix continues to expand its gaming strategy with Unhinged, a new interactive horror experience developed by Night School Studio, the team behind the acclaimed Oxenfree and Oxenfree II: Lost Signals.

The title launches on June 30th exclusively for all Netflix subscribers and represents one of the platform's most ambitious ventures into narrative gaming. Rather than a traditional video game, Unhinged is designed as an interactive cinematic experience lasting roughly 30-40 minutes—the time it takes to watch a single TV episode. This deliberate choice reflects Netflix's understanding of how subscribers actually engage with content, rarely settling in for marathon gaming sessions.

Your Smartphone Becomes the Controller... and the Protagonist's Phone

The real innovation lies in how you interact with Unhinged. After launching the game from Netflix's Games section on your TV, you simply scan a QR code to connect your smartphone.

From that moment on, your phone becomes a direct extension of the game world. It controls the protagonist's flashlight through motion sensors, but more importantly, it receives actual calls, texts, and vibrations from other characters. Phone audio plays through your device while ambient effects continue through your TV speakers—creating an immersion level rarely seen in interactive horror.

A Nightmare Night During a Hurricane

The protagonist is Ava, voiced by Zoë Kravitz, trapped in her high-rise apartment during a devastating Category 5 hurricane. Her only lifeline is her friend Claire (Sadie Sink), who lives in the building across the way and communicates solely through phone calls.

What begins as a straightforward weather emergency quickly becomes something far more sinister. The building's stairwells are blocked, neighbors have vanished, and Ava realizes she's not alone. Every decision you make determines whether she survives.

A Star-Studded Cast and Cinematic Production

Netflix invested heavily in talent. Beyond the voice acting of Zoë Kravitz, Sadie Sink, and legendary voice performer Troy Baker, the score comes from Jason Hill (Mindhunter), while sound design is handled by Ren Klyce, longtime collaborator with David Fincher and Oscar nominee for his work on The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Netflix's Vision for Gaming's Future

According to major tech outlets, Unhinged is far more than a simple horror experiment. Publications like The Verge and TechRadar highlight how Netflix is attempting to redefine streaming games entirely—removing traditional controllers and barriers to entry in order to reach people who don't typically play video games. The goal is to deliver immediate, easily shareable experiences that feel native to the Netflix ecosystem.

If Unhinged resonates with audiences, it could mark the beginning of a new era where cinema, television, and gaming finally merge into a single medium.
