Il giovane ingegnere Oliver conosce allo zoo l'affascinante Irene, una ragazza di origine slava. In breve i due si innamorano e si sposano. Tutto filerebbe a meraviglia se non fosse che Irene si rifiuta di baciare il marito perché teme un'antica maledizione della sua terra. Secondo una leggenda infatti le donne come lei si tramutano in pantera ogni volta che baciano un uomo.

Una ragazza rifiuta qualsiasi rapporto con il marito perché così facendo, secondo le superstizioni del suo popolo, si trasformerebbe in una belva assassina. Ne fa le spese un incredulo psichiatra che prima di morire riesce a colpirla a morte. Un altro classico del bianco e nero firmato da uno dei più importanti registi di genere del periodo. Regia solida e senza sbavature, buoni gli interpreti e la sceneggiatura ma il film rimane lontano dai gusti del moderno spettatore.

Simone Simon ("Irina Dubrovna") comes to work in New York where she falls in love with Kent Smith ("Oliver Reed"). Their relationship soon becomes strained after she struggles with intimacy - you see she believes that should she ever even kiss someone she loved, she would turn into a violent feline and claw him to death. She confides in her now husband and somewhat sceptical, he sends her to a psychiatrist, the debonaire Tom Conway ("Dr. Judd"). Our story tracks her determination to get past this obsession in the face of her growing suspicion that "Oliver" is seeking solace elsewhere - and that they are planning on having her committed - in a tense and eerie way. The dialogue is quite stilted and the theatricality of the performances rob the film of much of it's pace - but it is still a good horror thriller.
