THE BROOD

A woman with psychiatric problems is admitted to a mental health clinic, where she undergoes a new therapy, "psychoplasmics," designed by a self-proclaimed doctor to treat personality disorders. The woman's husband does not trust the doctor, and things get even more complicated when strange murders begin that seem somehow linked to the clinic... Along with the subsequent "The Fly," undoubtedly the best horror film by the Canadian director. With "Brood," Cronenberg surprises the viewer, reversing the classic rules of horror and transforming the subjects usually unaware victims of the facts - children, women - into horrible murderers. After "The Demon under the Skin" and "Rabid," some of the classic themes of Cronenbergian cinema return: the obsession with the dark aspects of the human psyche, physical malformation seen as a factor of estrangement from society, medicine put at the service of a man's madness. A film rich in suspense, enhanced by the excellent performances of the cast (in which a great Oliver Reed and an excellent Samantha Eggar stand out) that culminates in a bloody and gruesome ending that will delight all splatter enthusiasts (the sequence of the birth of one of the small "monsters" is an anthology of the genre!). Strangely, and unjustly, little known, absolutely worth rediscovering. Difficult to find, the uncut version of the film.
