The Verdict

A shy and complex girl, but with strange extrasensory powers, is continuously the victim of unsympathetic pranks by her classmates; the headmistress, who remembers the tragic consequences of a similar situation that occurred several years earlier, tries to help her, but in vain: in fact, the poor girl is invited to a party during which a short film is projected, the result of a recording made without the girl's…

A shy and complex girl, but with strange extrasensory powers, is continuously the victim of unsympathetic pranks by her classmates; the headmistress, who remembers the tragic consequences of a similar situation that occurred several years earlier, tries to help her, but in vain: in fact, the poor girl is invited to a party during which a short film is projected, the result of a recording made without the girl's knowledge, where she appears in "amorous attitudes" with a boy. Naturally, all the guests start laughing at her, who decides to take revenge and, unleashing her paranormal powers, commits a massacre… Sequel to the great "Carrie" by DePalma, the film is well made, enjoyable and fun; it even manages to give us some splatter sequences (remember the scene where a boy is castrated with an underwater rifle), it falters a bit at the end and never reaches the level of the first chapter, but remains a good production. In the cast, a "survivor" from the first "Carrie" by De Palma: it is the actress Amy Irving who plays again the character of Sue Snell (the only friend of "Carrie" in the first film) who in this sequel has become the headmistress of the school.

This is both a weak sequel, but with a story hook to the first movie, as well as a simple retelling of the first movie. All this movie does is move the exact plot beats forward in time and updates the characters slightly. The late 90s were strange when you look at the culture. The rampant misogyny, fat shaming, conformist views were both accepted and also to be challenged in movies like this. It's shot in a very particular way that dates it incredibly hard and while the actors are doing the best they can with the material they were given it's simply a matter of the spirit of the age exacting its tribute and making this a far less interesting a movie than it could have been if it was made before or after. We already know what a good version of this movie is because it has already been done. It is its prequel. This version isn't bad but it certainly cannot live up to those high expectations.
