As Chianese
•Right after that small masterpiece that was "La Corta Notte delle Bambole di Vetro", the director from Fiume, Aldo Lado, who apparently helped Dario Argento a lot during the first drafts of "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage", makes another intense thriller that will raise him several notches above the crowd, the imitators. The film starts immediately with the murder, in France, of a little girl. The event seems to be an isolated case, but four years later, the same thing happens again, with the same and identical modus operandi by the murderer, in Venice. But here, the father of the last murdered girl (the actor George Lazenby, who almost played the role of agent 007) after finding the dark and distant connection, will manage to track down the killer, whom we see disguised in some sequences like in "Psycho": as an old lady, whose true identity will only be known after a real massacre of the possible suspects. A good artistic cast: Anita Strindberg, Peter Chatel, and Adolfo Celi oppose a not-perfect screenplay to which the solid direction of Lado and the splendid music of Ennio Morricone add strength. It is perhaps one of the best films set in Venice, a maze of anguishing suspicions among the alleys. If we were to make a comparison, we would say that it is the horror/thriller remake of "Anonimo Veneziano" from which it does not inherit the sophistication and the melodrama but rather the true face, the decay of Venice: a beautiful corpse. Curiosity. The first and true edition of the film did not have the question mark in the title.
