A villa, nicknamed "Hell House," is at the center of inexplicable events linked to the supernatural world. Two mediums and a scientist, accompanied by his wife, seek to uncover the secret of that cursed dwelling; in the end, after an inevitable blood tribute, the terrible mystery hidden by the villa will be revealed... The film is based on the beautiful story by Richard Matheson "Hell House" and scripted by the writer himself. Plot and atmosphere of a "classic horror film": a cursed mansion, murders, strange noises, objects moving on their own... all seasoned with good suspense that allows you to follow the entire film without ever causing drops in interest or tension. Veteran John Hough preferred not to dwell on the gruesome effect but to create suspense through noises, mysterious voices, doors that suddenly close and open; an operation certainly successful also thanks to the excellent performances of the protagonists (Roddy McDowall and Pamela Franklin above all) and the gloomy natural setting provided by the dilapidated villa where the film was shot. A horror perhaps not memorable, but certainly successful, that deserves to be seen at least once.
