Ann, George e il piccolo Georgie sono in cammino verso la loro seconda casa, dove passeranno le vacanze estive. I vicini di casa, Fred e Eva, sono già arrivati e si organizzano per vedersi tutti il giorno dopo per una partita di golf. Mentre suo marito e suo figlio sono al lago per sistemare la barca a vela messa recentemente a nuovo, Ann inizia a preparare la cena. All'improvviso si ritrova faccia a faccia con Peter, un ragazzo estremamente gentile, ospite dei vicini di casa, venuto a chiedere delle uova. Poco dopo arriva anche Paul, amico di Peter e come lui, ospite dei loro vicini. Inizialmente cortesi e garbati, i due ragazzi iniziano a diventare insistenti e decisamente molesti, tanto da indurre Ann a chiedere loro di andarsene; i ragazzi si riufiutano, ferendo George a una gamba e prendendo letteralmente in ostaggio la povera famiglia, torturandola con meschini e umilianti giochetti.

This is a movie I can't help but really despise. Especially egregious is the pretentious way in which the filmmaker takes a position of haughty moral indignation and attempts to guilt-trip his own audience for wanting to watch a horror film in the first place. We know what he wanted to achieve with this movie, because he has told us explicitly; and he thought so highly of his achievement that he decided to make the film twice, shot-for-shot. Every scene is deliberately calculated to be as awkward to watch and as boring as possible, since anti-suspense is part of the "point". It is essentially the writer/director giving a middle finger to anyone willing to sit through this finger-wagging tripe.
