Police Lieutenant Joseph Thorne finds himself investigating the mysterious death of an old school friend, found horrifically disfigured. At the crime scene, a mysterious "cubic box" is also found... Trying to unravel what seems to be a very complicated case, the policeman begins his hunt for the mysterious killer, but between one clue and another, strange visions and nightmares haunt him, disturbing his investigation. The policeman begins to see in his horrifying dreams crimes committed by infernal creatures that torture and mutilate the bodies of their victims and then materialize. During his search, the trail of bodies increases vertiginously. Furthermore, as if it were not enough, at each crime scene, a child's finger is found, which, it seems, is still alive. The detective thus begins his race against time with the hope of finding the boy still alive. His tenacious search for the truth will lead him to the mysterious and sinister figure of the "Engineer" who seems to be the common element of the murders... Fifth chapter of the saga of Pinhead and the Cenobites, the film is released in our country with a three-year delay. The direction is entrusted to Scott Derrickson and the film is essentially characterized by a clear change of trend compared to the previous episodes. The truculent effects and splatter typical of the previous chapters give way to a greater psychological introspection of the protagonist, played by the good Craig Scheffer, as well as a more police-like cut of the story. Although it is nothing original, it is praiseworthy the idea of presenting the protagonist as a tormented and corrupted man, who often moves at the limits of the law and is devoted to vices such as alcohol, drugs, and prostitution. Moreover, very fascinating is the use of lights and colors that gives vigor and atmosphere to the film. Also noteworthy is the presence of Doug Bradley, in the role, for the fifth time, of the fierce and implacable Pinhead. Undoubtedly, overall, the judgment is positive. Compared to other sagas like Halloween, Friday the 13th, or Nightmare, this one is undoubtedly the most original, at least judging by this fifth chapter. Given the result obtained, certainly more than discreet, the next episodes are awaited with curiosity, hoping that they manage to maintain this level of quality.
