Aschley, protagonist of the two previous episodes of the "La casa" saga (Evil Dead), finds himself trapped in the Middle Ages. Reluctantly, he will have to gain the trust of the men of the time and then fight again against the forces of evil, which, this time, have even organized an army of the undead. This last chapter of Raimi's saga is now completely focused on comedy and special effects, leaving aside any attempt to scare the public. The dark atmospheres of "La casa" are light years away, but after all, "La casa 2" was already on these wavelengths even if with "Army of Darkness" the attempt seems much more successful. The film is absolutely entertaining, with a series of very successful gags and fantastic special effects but much less elaborate than they might seem. "Army of Darkness" is a real feast for the eyes and heart of film lovers, thanks to its continuous references and homages to classics of the genre and not only: Raimi manages to quote, with nonchalance and unparalleled irony, the classics of science fiction ("The Day the Earth Stood Still", "The Argonauts") but also Hong Kong films. Unfortunately, the film suffered a lot from production and editing problems and did not have the success it deserved.
