The Verdict
In a Padane farm of the eighteenth century where a father and four sons live, a wandering pianist arrives. At first, the men refuse this female presence, but then they decide to all marry the girl. Shortly after the long celebration for the multiple wedding, the pianist disappears.
Another small masterpiece by the great Pupi Avati, unjustly held in little consideration and which instead turns out to be one of his most successful films. "The Stars in the Pit", again starring Gianni Cavina and Lino Capolicchio, is a story of ghosts and peasant fables, bizarre, moving, and terrifying at the same time. Avati's inclination for the macabre and the terrifying is revealed in this film at several points: the appearance of the ghost of a cleric who emerges from the waters of a lake or the chilling fairy tale of the dead mother who returns at night to reclaim from the daughters what they had stolen from her. Absolutely worth rediscovering.
