Amity is a quiet seaside resort that owes its income almost exclusively to tourism. But suddenly, a great white shark takes possession of the waters and kills a girl. The mayor of Amity wonders if it is right to sacrifice the town and send tourists to other places so that the beaches are not closed... Three men on a boat, belonging to three different social classes, with a different life experience, join their forces in search of the dangerous animal.. Based on a novel by P. Benchley and directed by the magician Spielberg, this film has entered the collective imagination and is one of the most cited, most copied and most famous of all time. Jewel of technique and especially editing (for which he won a well-deserved Oscar, along with that for the soundtrack), "Lo squalo" presents various themes that will recur in Spielberg's subsequent films: machismo, the absence of the father, the revenge of the common man. Scheduled by critics as a "commercial" film, "Lo squalo" instead presents itself, both from the narrative and technical point of view, as pure cinema and not simply as a spectacular comic. Think only of the central idea of the film: what we are most afraid of is the unexpected, something we cannot see, hear, nor even dominate, but that exists and has the ability to strike. So Spielberg chooses not to almost ever show the shark, but to make us feel its presence. Great cinema! Curiosity: "Lo squalo" is the third film by Steven Spielberg, then twenty-eight years old, and his first great success. The film is still in the list of the top ten most watched in the world. The shark was built in polyurethane, was about seven meters long and weighed a ton and a half. It sank as soon as it was put in the water. The technicians tried again a second time: it exploded. After many attempts, the "model" Bruce won, which cost about three and a half million dollars (in 1975!).
