Maya Larkin is a young woman whose life was saved by faith: the Evil One had taken possession of her soul, later freed through an exorcism. Now, the woman is convinced that the Devil is about to incarnate in the body of Peter Kelson, a charming bestselling author, and tries in every way to prevent the coming of the Antichrist, but she must fight, beyond the skepticism of the Church itself, also with the sect of the Evil One's worshipers. Directorial debut by Kaminski, already an Oscar winner for cinematography in "Schindler's List" and "Saving Private Ryan", with a story halfway between "The Exorcist" and "The Omen". The film, despite a good cast (Winona Ryder, Ben Chaplin) and some "jump out of your seat" sequences, fails to engage the viewer, also due to the sudden and abrupt ending. Original, however, is the director's choice, who, through a particular use of colors, manages to give the film a dark and gloomy atmosphere. In short, a good horror, smooth, well acted and even, at times, "scary" but pervaded by an inevitable sense of "seen it before". One last curiosity: the film was produced by actress Meg Ryan.
