A sect of devil worshippers has committed a series of horrific murders over the past thirty years to pave the way for the arrival of Satan's son. When the opportune period for the birth of the Antichrist arrives, the high priest of the sect visits a young teacher, the chosen one to become the mother of the malevolent child... Produced and co-written by Dario Argento and directed by his favorite student Michele Soavi, "La Setta" could have, and indeed should have, been a great film. The result, however, is an intensely dreamlike horror with a slow pace and inevitably boring; although the film offers some good sequences (one in particular where a young woman's face is literally torn off during a sacrificial ritual), it never takes off, leaving the viewer with the feeling of having seen a decent film but that could have been much more. Rich in references, from "Rosemary's Baby" to Argento's own thrillers, the film is a sort of "style demonstration" that, while commendable, is not very engaging. Notable in the cast is the presence of Kelly Curtis, sister of the more famous Jamie Lee of "Halloween".
