•Corman was not just a great horror author. Throughout his decades-long career, he explored the most varied genres, including, as in this case, science fiction. A scientist, Ray Milland (Academy Award for Best Actor for « Days of Wine and Roses » by Billy Wilder) discovers a kind of serum with which to see through objects and bodies. His invention, hindered by colleagues and authorities, first fascinates and exhilarates him, then gradually leads him to self-destruction. A discreet screenplay for a film that, although it does not offer extraordinary moments (the ending where Milland blinds himself is still very beautiful), maintains a good level, with always careful direction, and the skill of Milland who is in every respect a great actor. Moreover, the references to « Frankenstein » and « The Invisible Man », works of quite another caliber, are evident. Little originality, much craftsmanship, but an appreciable attempt nonetheless.
