The Verdict

Remake of the ‘60s film, identical plot except for the setting: in an American village instead of a Scottish one. One of Carpenter’s few disappointing films, based on a story that had already said all it had to say in the ‘60s film, the movie drags on slowly until the predictable ending.

One of Carpenter’s few disappointing films, based on a story that had already said all it had to say in the ‘60s film, the movie drags on slowly until the predictable ending. No bloody, scary, or suspenseful sequences, and the special effects leave something to be desired. Carpenter usually claims he loves all his films like his own children; we’re sure he loves this one a little less than the others…

Carpenter builds on the original. This is a great remake of an already good movie with updated effects and fantastic casting. This production comes out looking pretty spiffy. The children are genuinely creepy and the way that they deal with their opposition is scary and very engaging. I enjoy seeing Mark in this, and with Christopher doing his last role, it is a sad bookend to his career. Not because the movie is bad, but because we miss him. The movie itself is great and I thoroughly recommend it.
