A girl, the fiancée of a serial killer who, once dead, had trapped his spirit in the Chucky doll, decides to steal from the police warehouses the doll that had given a body and a refuge to that maniac. Once the doll is restored, she calls back to life the spirit of her ex-boyfriend who, to be nice to her, kills her and, through a black magic ritual, traps her in the body of another doll. Now the two need young bodies to transfer their evil spirits into, and they immediately identify two young lovers who fit the bill. Ten years ago, Don Mancini created a character who would become one of the icons of horror cinema: "Child's Play", now entered the horror imagination like Dracula, Frankenstein or Freddy Krueger. An appealing character, born from the transmigration of the soul of a psychotic killer into a common doll. The producers of "Bride of Chucky" did not simply create a sequel to "Child's Play", but something new, a mix of horror and humor, almost absent in the first film of the saga, alternating scenes that elicit more than one laugh with violent sequences from a true horror film, all in a really well-done mix. The two dolls, animated by very sophisticated mechanical devices and equipped with numerous copies in different poses and with different expressions, are simply magnificent and seem really alive. Worth seeing even for those who have never been fans of the "Child's Play" series. Trivia: the film won two awards at the 2000 edition of the FantaFestival in the categories of special effects and leading actress (Jennifer Tilly).

Bride of Chucky was the true turning point for the franchise, and though they hadn't 100% embraced comedy at this point like they did in the followup, there's still at least as much humour and reference in this one as there is elements of "horror". The central premise of a horror road trip, where the lead couple each believe the other party is the culprit (and are both wrong) is pretty solid, as is the final showdown, but the connective tissue is a bit wishy washy, and the inability to commit to a tone doesn't serve the movie very well, putting it at a lower point than any of its predecessors.

Final rating:★★½ - Had a lot that appealed to me, didn’t quite work as a whole.
