Sequel to "The Mask of Frankenstein". The mad baron, sentenced to the gallows, survives at the last moment, and can thus continue his studies at the head of a psychiatric hospital and under a false name. He creates a new monster, which however rebels and reveals cannibalistic tendencies. The patients of the clinic try to tear the baron apart, but he survives thanks to the resurrection obtained with his mad methods. Second episode of Fisher's saga (three more will follow), typical gothic horror from Hammer, which follows a conventional plot and offers no particular innovative elements. The icon Peter Cushing puts all his charisma into it, but the film moves on without much bite, between touches of black humor and sporadic splatter tricks. Well judged by critics and enjoyable for lovers of Hammer's B-movies, it is however clearly inferior to the re-editions of Poe's stories by Corman that will come soon, which, while maintaining the same basic characteristics, will benefit from a much more fascinating use of color, a much more imaginative direction, and the greater skill of Vincent Price.
