Two sisters, returning from a trip, come back to their hometown and discover that all the inhabitants have disappeared. They begin to wander through the city and soon realize that their fellow citizens have not left the town but are all dead: they find some of their bodies in a state of semi-decomposition or horribly mutilated. Shortly after, they meet the sheriff of the neighboring county with two of his men, who arrived in town because they were suspicious of a call they had received from the local police. The group begins to have strange visions and is attacked by unknown creatures; meanwhile, the army has arrived on the scene with some researchers. The mystery is revealed: a pluricentenary creature known as "the ancient enemy" has decided to come out from the bowels of the earth to find new food... Based on a story by the fantasy-horror writer Dean Koontz, the film starts well (the initial sequences in which the two women wander through the abandoned town are full of suspense) but then loses its way, becoming banal, to end with an implausible finale. In the cast, Ben Affleck stands out. The film in Italy was released in theaters for just one weekend with little success.
