The Verdict
A small town in Germany is shaken by numerous murders involving young and beautiful girls. These crimes recall the famous legend of Baron Winninger, a man who, due to a terrible curse on his name, is forced to return to the world of the living every 28 years for 28 days to satisfy his insatiable thirst for blood. An ancestor of the baron arrives from England, who, along with the police inspector, will try to prove that the legend of Baron Winninger is just a myth.
"The Manias of Mr. Winninger, Sexual Murderer" is a small Spanish production of little importance released in the early 1970s to capitalize on the success of the numerous films on the theme of classic monsters, released mainly in England thanks to the infamous production company Hammer. And so, in 1970, it was decided in Spain to make a film in perfect English style on the theme of the classic vampire.
The film, directed by José Luis Madrid Delavena, is based on an excellent idea that, unfortunately, is poorly exploited; indeed, the intriguing theme of the vampire who returns to life every 28 years for 28 days (which anticipated the recent horror "Jeepers Creepers") is only mentioned in the first ten minutes to be then totally ignored and forgotten in the rest of the film, transforming a base subject original and interesting in the classic film seen a thousand times about the vampire baron and a descendant who hunts him.
Other demerit points are in the aesthetic representation of the bloodsucker and in the very low level of gore and splatter: the vampire appears terribly inexpressive and without charisma, too similar to a thousand other vampires seen in old Dracula films and is destined to be forgotten a few minutes after the end of the film; as for the level of violence, the film could have easily shown bloody or at least violent scenes given the large number of victims, but there is not even a drop of blood and all the murders are resolved with a banal strangulation.
In conclusion, "The Manias of Mr. Winninger, Sexual Murderer" turns out to be a rather weak and uninteresting film, which fascinates the viewer in the first ten minutes to then leave him with a terrible sense of déjà vu.
Easily negligible.
